As the countdown begins to the inaugural Escape Travel AFA Cup, the media team are catching up with each of the participating sides. The first team to come under the microscope are the Eastcoast Eagles of Northern New South Wales, who are competing in the Womens Tournament.
We spoke to head coach Mick Day. Day, who was a member of last year’s Australia U17 Boys IFA World Cup winning coaching team, is raring to go. He said: “It is a great concept, inviting the best teams from around Australia to compete. We were very excited and honoured to receive the invitation.
“Preparation has been difficult at the moment as many of our players have been away representing both here in Australia and internationally. Three of our girls recently returned from IFA World Cup in Spain, but training is now well underway and the squad is in good shape.
“Our squad has had some changes since competing at the National Championships last January. We have new, young girls developing and coming into this tournament for the first time.”
When asked about his expectations for the squad, Day said: “Every team in this tournament has been invited because of their performances over the past 12 months, so we think it will be tough and look forward to competing well. We want to play nice futsal and would hope to make the final.
“Some of our girls and coaching staff are used to the media and have performed amazing at high profile events, but we do have new girls who have not experienced the media side of tournaments. We will look to our senior girls to guide them and keep the squad focused.
Day rounded off by saying: “We would like to thank AFA, Escape Travel, the sponsors and media crew for this opportunity and hosting the event.”
The squad representing Eastcoast Eagles is as follows: Imogene Tomasone, Courtney Anderson, Keea Parish, Shannon Day, Sophi Jones, Helen Moseley, Maddison Stockham, Jessica Hayes, Emily Newett, Britt Hargreaves.
